CHAPTER 25
The dragonflies were putting on their almost nightly performance. It was that special time in the evening, when they seemed to swarm her yard and perform their aeronautical wonders. They were hunting their prey, but it had taken a while for Jenn to figure out if there was a purpose to the show. Mating was the first thought that popped into her mind, but the dragonflies never connected or showed any interest in each other. They zigged and zagged at odd angles, moving in an upward diagonal direction. After a careful study, she realized they were hunting insects, sneaking up on them from below, and catching them in their legs.
It was a special treat to watch and appreciate. Some folks could sit on a deck all summer drinking cocktails and talking about their neighbors, and never notice the dragonflies darting backward, forward, and diagonally. Dragonflies had four wings and unlike other insects, they could uniquely move each wing independently. The hind wings on dragonflies sometimes flapped just a bit ahead of the front wings. This staggered flapping allowed the back wings to catch the air generated by the front wings, which generates more lift with less energy than the typical two-winged system used by butterflies and other insects.
Jenn observed with fascination these creatures with their unique double winged system, that had lived on the earth for over 300 million years. As she watched them, she thought about the last two weeks. Two dead people in the small idyllic shoreline town in which she had spent her life, all connected with one controversial piece of land. Land with a future that was up in the air. Homes, open space, playing fields, what would happen to the last two-hundred feet of beachfront of the New England coastline, not set aside as public land? Why should only a few wealthy individuals get to enjoy this shorefront land with another private neighborhood beach? Maybe it should be a green beach, accessible and open to everyone? The existence of blue spotted salamander eggs would certainly slow the development down. But who would kill others over that? It didn’t mean the development was impossible. It was just another potential hurdle. Jenn thought about who had a vested interest in the outcome. Who would benefit financially if the project went through?
Certainly, Charlie Martins, and Riverfront Landing’s corporate investors, she concluded. After all, Charlie was the spokesperson for the project and was the most vested in the outcome. Rumor in town was that he was personally all-in on the project. He had staked his retirement savings and the equity in his house on its success. But who were his other investors? Jenn really didn’t know. She might have to find out.
Jenn thought about her boss for a moment, well one of her many bosses, David Webster, the attorney representing Riverfront Landing. He also had a financial and career investment in the project succeeding. But development projects failed all the time and lawyers were not to blame. Some land use battles were won and some were lost.
